What happens at rodeos? ›

American-style professional rodeos generally comprise the following events: tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, Steer roping, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding and barrel racing. The events are divided into two basic categories: the rough stock events and the timed events.

Known by rodeo fans as the “Daddy of 'em All,” Cheyenne Frontier Days is the world's largest outdoor rodeo and Western festival. The nine-day rodeo takes place in late July and includes three bull sections and two sections of saddle and bareback broncos daily.

It is very hard to trace the first rodeo in America. Many places make this claim including: Sante Fe, New Mexico in 1847, Deer Trail, Colorado in 1869, and Pecos, Texas in 1883. All early rodeos varied greatly by events and most were free to the public. Prescott, Arizona held their first rodeo on July 4, 1888 .

The rodeo has its roots in the daily chores of ranching, where cowboys and cowgirls needed to demonstrate their skills in handling cattle and performing essential ranch tasks. Over time, these skills became a spectacle in itself, and rodeo began to be considered a sport and a form of entertainment.

Accusations of cruelty in U.S. rodeos persist. The PRCA acknowledges they sanction only about 30% of all rodeos, another 50% are sanctioned by other organizations and 20% are completely unsanctioned. Several animal rights and animal welfare organizations keep records of accidents and incidents of possible animal abuse.

Trevor Brazile (born November 16, 1976, Amarillo, Texas, U.S.) is an American rodeo cowboy who dominated the sport in the early 21st century. He set records in lifetime earnings, single-season earnings, and greatest winnings at a single rodeo and became the third cowboy to win more than one triple crown.

Rodeo stresses its western folk hero image and its being a genuinely American creation. But in fact it grew out of the practices of Spanish ranchers and their Mexican ranch hands (vaqueros), a mixture of cattle wrangling and bullfighting that dates back to the sixteenth-century conquistadors.
