Demon Slayer: MBTI Of The Main Characters (2024)

Demon Slayer was the definitive breakout anime hit of 2019. The series follows a young Demon Slayer named Tanjiro Kamado, whose family is mysteriously killed — except for his younger sister, Nezuko, who is transformed into a demon instead. Tanjiro and Nezuko travel in search of the demon that destroyed their family, hoping to find a way to restore Nezuko's human form.

It's no surprise that a series like Demon Slayer has a large cast of memorable and unique characters, so many of them can be analyzed using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Although the MBTI has been denounced by academics and scholars around the world, it remains an interesting method to evaluate fictional characters.

15 Kanao Tsuyuri is Shinobu's Quiet Student

ISFJ

Kanao Tsuyuri is the adoptive sister of and successor to Shinobu Kocho. Kanao is one of the more talented Demon Slayers in the series, but a childhood of enduring abuse has left her indecisive and quiet. She has trouble making decisions, so she flips a coin to decide which path to follow.

By any standards, Kanao is an ISFJ. She's arguably the most introverted person in the series, but she's also analytical and hardworking, being able to get to the level of the Hashira in a relatively short amount of time. Kanao also exhibits a high degree of perception in the field, as shown when Shinobu trusted her to find a way to defeat one of the Upper Moon demons.

14 Kagaya Ubuyashiki Leads the Demon Slayer Corps With Kindness

INFJ

Kagaya Ubuyashiki, better known as "Oyakata-sama" to his followers and peers, is the soft-spoken leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, and a definitive INFJ. He's a calm and gentle person, and he shows his compassion by learning the names of every Demon Slayer so as not to forget them when they die.

Even though he can't fight because of a curse, his idealistic way of leading the Demon Slayer Corps has earned him the respect of the Hashira, who are a tough bunch to please. Kagaya was also the only one willing to accept Tanjiro's and Nezuko's unique situation when none of his subordinates did. Unfortunately, Kagaya is now in poor health and isn't in any shape to lead the Demon Slayer Corps with his idealistic, methodical mindset.

13 Shinobu Kocho Hides Her Anger and Focuses on Her Poisons

INTJ

The Insect Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu Kocho, is an INTJ. In her youth, Shinobu was quite bold and brash, but during the series, she has taken on a much more laid-back personality. She can always be seen with a smile on her face. Like other INTJs, Shinobu is calculating and patient, never rushing into anything without thinking it through first.

Shinobu doesn't have the physical strength to decapitate a demon, so she had to find another way to be able to defeat her enemies. To compensate for her lack of strength, Shinobu has her blade coated in wisteria poison, and now she only needs a few quick slashes to kill a demon. Shinobu's skill with poison will definitely benefit the Hashira in the final battle against Muzan, and the Corps certainly needs tactical thinkers like Shinobu.

12 Giyu Tomioka Can't Easily Overcome His Guilt About Sabito

ISTJ

The very first Demon Slayer whom Tanjiro meets is Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira. Giyu is a very reserved person (though he has a complex about what others think of him) and has a strong sense of justice. He has no patience for people who throw away their lives and don't know their limitations.

Giyu is a classic ISTJ. Aside from being reserved and analytical, Giyu is known for being trustworthy with good judgment. Even though he shows no hesitation when killing demons, Giyu spares Nezuko and even vouches for her in front of the other Hashira. ISTJs aren't terribly sentimental, but despite that, Giyu is wracked with guilt after Sabito got himself killed on Giyu's account, as Tanjiro learned in a recent flashback sequence.

11 Kyojuro Rengoku is a Boisterous, Idealistic Warrior

ENFJ

The Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku is one of the more eccentric members of the Demon Slayer Corps, and that's saying a lot. He's always cheerful and enthusiastic about his duties, and a lifetime of strict practice and discipline has made him an extraordinary Demon Slayer.

Rengoku is definitely an ENFJ. He's caring and responsible, and he values connections with other people, which he demonstrated during the Demon Train Arc. He protects over 200 people from being killed and eaten by demons, even holding back the Upper Moon 3, Akaza. ENFJs tend to be role models for everyone around them as people-oriented, idealistic leaders, though they can be a bit overbearing if they don't have enough self-awareness.

10 Inosuke Hashibira is Practical, Whimsical, and Loud

ESTP

Arguably the "best boy" of the series, Inosuke Hashibira is an ESTP. Inosuke is a proud person with a very short fuse, and he's constantly challenging people to fight to prove that he's the strongest. This makes him very outgoing, but not necessarily in a good way.

As viewers can never predict when or where he's going to challenge someone, Inosuke has the spontaneity of an ESTP. Further, to call him action-oriented would be a severe understatement. He's always eager to charge headfirst into battle and usually solves his problems with his swords. Inosuke isn't the warm and fuzzy kind, true to his MBTI type, but even an ESTP can value their friends if those friends impress them with incredible feats, as Tanjiro has already done.

9 Zenitsu Agatsuma Values His Friends But Finds Them Scary, Too

ISFP

Zenitsu Agatsuma is a Demon Slayer who utilizes the Thunder Breathing style and lives in a near-constant state of fear. He has low self-esteem and is constantly insisting that he doesn't have long to live because of the dangers of being a Demon Slayer.

Zenitsu best fits into the ISFP personality type. Despite his cowardly nature, Zenitsu tries his hardest to help people when necessary, much like other ISFPs. A good example of this is during the Drum House Arc, where Zenitsu fights to protect a child even though he's terrified of the demons lurking around the mansion. ISFPs tend to be an odd mix of introverted and expressive, using art and their adventures to explore their inner world without being too flashy or boastful about it.

8 Nezuko Kamado is a Kind, Gentle Girl Who Fights For Humanity

ISFJ

Nezuko Kamado is Tanjiro's younger sister, who was turned into a demon after Muzan killed the rest of her family. As a demon, she doesn't quite have the same personality as she did when she was human, but it's close enough to fall into the same personality type.

In other words, Nezuko is an indisputable ISFJ. She's a kind and caring girl both before and after becoming a demon. Thanks to the influence of Sakonji Urokodaki, Nezuko now sees every human as a member of her family and is therefore very protective of them. An ISFJ like Nezuko is a selfless, hard-working, and methodical person who supports everyone around them without being too impulsive about it. That makes ISFJs like Nezuko quite reliable.

7 Muzan Kibutsuji Is a Brilliant Schemer and Cruel Boss

ENTJ

Muzan Kibutsuji is the overarching antagonist of Demon Slayer and by far the most vicious demon in existence. Muzan is the first of his kind and the only one who can turn humans into demons. He's a cold-hearted and ruthless monster, fitting perfectly into the ENTJ personality type.

ENTJs tend to be great strategic planners, something Muzan certainly is. He's also ambitious and efficient, seeking to find a way to conquer the sun by any means necessary while being able to blend into human society. Defeat is not something Muzan is familiar with, as evidenced by the sheer number of demon minions at his disposal.

ENFJ

Tanjiro Kamado is a kind person by nature, often being described as having gentle eyes. He best exemplifies an ENFJ personality type. Not only is he tender and caring, but he also has the idealistic determination to achieve any goal he sets his mind to.

Perhaps Tanjiro's most notable trait that pegs him as an ENFJ is his ability to communicate and connect with people. He is not only able to break through Kanao's emotional walls and get her to start opening up, but he also empathizes with demons. He sees demons as victims and has been able to connect with some of them enough that they ask for forgiveness for their sins.

5 Mitsuri Kanroji is Like Nezuko's New Big Sister

ESFJ

The deceptively strong Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, is a classic ESFJ. This personality type is the more outgoing version of the ISFJ since both types are reliable, practical people who prefer a stable life and routines. ESFJs like Mitsuri love to connect with people and make decent leaders, though they lack the intuitive vision of types such as ENFJ or ENTJ.

Mitsuri is a stabilizing element in Tanjiro's and Nezuko's lives, and Demon Slayer fans would love to see more of her as both a fighter and an outstanding human being. She is even like a big sister to Nezuko, which Nezuko clearly enjoys since she never had a big sister growing up. Like most ESFJs, Mitsuri accepts life as it is and focuses less on future theories and more on helping the people around her as a responsible, smart young lady.

4 Genya Shinazugawa Just Wants to Reconnect With His Brother

ISFP

Genya Shinazugawa made a rough first impression when he first appeared during the final selection, but ever since he returned to Demon Slayer's main story, he has shown his gentler and more empathetic side. Genya is insecure about his inferior strength compared to his Hashira brother, so he learns repetitive action to make up for it and power up.

Genya is also a heartfelt young man who misses his family dearly and wants to reconnect with his fierce older brother. In recent Demon Slayer episodes, Genya approaches Sanemi in a bid to mend their brotherly ties, which is a total ISFP move. ISFPs are generally withdrawn but are also sensitive and take life as it comes, so they may treat their life as a meandering adventure where humanity comes first.

3 Tengen Uzui is the Flashiest Hashira Alive

ESTP

Tengen Uzui rivals Kyojuro Rengoku as a flamboyant extrovert. He is totally comfortable meeting and talking to people all the time, and he has some strong leadership traits, almost like an ESTJ or ENTJ. The ESTP type is all about energetic adventures and practical projects, which suits a trained ninja like Tengen. He's not the type to sit around formulating plans; he wants to get out there and accomplish something, such as fighting the Upper Moon 6.

Tengen performed well in the Entertainment District story arc, and now he's helping coach the Demon Slayer Corps' warriors as a retired Hashira. As a true ESTP, Tengen can communicate loudly and clearly while also approaching this training from a pragmatic, creative standpoint without worrying too much about a schedule or advanced theories.

2 Sanemi Shinazugawa Shows No Mercy in Training

ESTJ

Genya's older brother Sanemi has a much different personality type. While an ISFP is quiet and adventure-oriented, an ESTJ like Sanemi is a born leader who isn't afraid to be strict and tough. The ESTJ type blends a practical, detail-oriented mindset with a methodical lifestyle and strong communication skills as a leader type. ESTJs make for good middle management and project leaders.

Sure enough, Sanemi is a methodical warrior who isn't as impulsive as his fierce temper would suggest, and he vastly prefers practical action and results over humanistic goals or theories. Unfortunately, Sanemi also embodies the ESTJ type's worst traits in being a harsh, uncompromising Hashira who only wants things done his way, even if people complain. Demon Slayer fans can see that for themselves in the Hashira training story arc.

1 Muichiro Tokito Quietly Became Tanjiro's Good Friend

INFP

Muichiro Tokito couldn't be more different than his fellow Hashira Sanemi Shinazugwa. The INFP type isn't a leader or a project manager at all; instead, the INFP type is an idealistic dreamer, flitting around from one idea or adventure to another while finding new ways to help everyone. INFPs may be introverted and quiet, but they care intensely about everyone around them and will support them in humble, sensitive ways.

When Tanjiro first met Muichiro, the Mist Hashira seemed cold and uncaring, but that was simply because Muichiro had learned to bury his pain and hide his sensitive heart with his duty as a demon slayer. It didn't take long for Tanjiro's heartfelt words to get through to him, and ever since, Muichiro has shown his true colors as a caring, friendly, and slightly whimsical young Hashira who fights for the sake of others.
