Damage reported in the Heartland from Sunday’s storms (2024)

(KFVS) - Multiple agencies across the Heartland are reporting damages to homes and buildings throughout the area due to severe weather on Sunday, May 26.

Several roadways are blocked due to flooding and/or downed trees.

Missouri

Cape Girardeau County

According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Bloomfield, Kingshighway, Silver Springs and Themis were all blocked. The streets have since been cleared.

Fire Chief Dillow with the Cape Girardeau Fire Dept. said crews were called to numerous water rescues Sunday morning. People were trying to drive through flooded roadways and getting stuck. There were only minor incidents, and no injuries or fatalities. However, he said some vehicles were flooded to the door, and some halfway up the tires. He wants to urge the public not to drive through water...turn around don’t drown. Water is knee-high in some places and too dangerous to drive through.

Reynolds County

The Ellington Fire Department says a FEMA shelter will open at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 due to severe weather.

Ripley County

According to Sheriff Mike Barton, there are several roads blocked and homes damaged. Phone and power lines are down.

He said straight-line winds and tornadoes touched down in several places.

The Emergency Management Agency said there is limited information at this time, but they know at least one person has been injured.

Crews are working to open roadways and checking on homes.

Wayne County

According to EMA, roads were blocked earlier this morning, but MoDOT was able to reopen most of them.

Crews are working to assess injuries and damages, so there is currently little information.

Phone lines and power lines are down in Williamsville.

EMA said they are focusing on work down in the Wappapello area.

Scott County

Multiple agencies are working to assess damage and clear roadways throughout the county. Phone lines are down.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, crews were clearing homes that had people entrapped and working at multiple locations with gas leaks. Crews will also be working on 12-hour shifts.

The City of Sikeston opened the City Compost Site on Compress Road for tree debris.

Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow and DPS Director James McMillen have ordered a curfew for the Sikeston city limits from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The curfew will be strictly enforced but does not apply to those involved in repairs, demolition, homeowners or property owners on their own property.

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at the YMCA in Sikeston. The shelter is up and running and has 40 beds with food arrangements being made.

The Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief will be at the First Baptist Church mid-morning on Monday, May 27 to for storm recovery efforts.

In Scott City, the FEMA building is and will remain open through any threat of hazardous weather.

In Benton, there are reports of roadways that are washed out.

New Madrid County

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, crews worked several crashes on Interstate 55 and U.S. 60 involving overturned semi-tractor trailers that blocked the roadway.

According to the City of New Madrid, crews are currently working to restore power to the circuit that feeds the areas of Mott, Mill, Davis and Water Streets, and Indian subdivision. We are hopeful those will be restored later this evening. Half of Greenbriar Dr. and Holy Land will not be restored this evening. Crews will have supplies in place, and begin working on that section first thing in the morning.

The City of New Madrid said the Community Building is open for those who need it.

As of 3 p.m. on Sunday, the city said power was restored to certain circuits in town and that crews are working as fast as they can to restore power.

The City of Sikeston has opened up the City Compost Site on Compress Road so tree debris can be taken there.

Anyone who is going to be displaced due to the storm can contact 1-800-733-2767 (1-800-RED CROSs) right away and the Red Cross will assess your situation individually.

Mississippi County

Illinois

Franklin County

As of 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency reported power lines down on the road at State Highway 34 and Ford Road.

Johnson County

The National Weather Service Paducah reported a tornado hit Goreville, Illinois. According to the NWS Paducah, houses were severely damaged and trailers were flipped.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department reported lots of structural damage, but no serious injuries after the storms They say they did rescue some families and individuals who were trapped in the homes or under debris. They say every law enforcement agency in the area will be out all night until roads are clear and power lines are repaired.

Williamson County

According to the Williamson County Emergency Management Agency, as of 11:44 p.m. on Sunday, preliminary assessments show significant damage to trees affecting power lines and transformers resulting in multiple power outages. No significant structural damage has been reported. They say the Lake of Egypt area straddles Williamson and Johnston Counties, with significant damage on the Johnson County side, including reports of injuries.

Kentucky

Hickman County

Emergency crews are currently responding to various locations of road closures due to trees down and possible damages. The communities of Fulgham, Springhill and Beulah are currently being assessed by EMA.

Hickman County Emergency Management also reported that a large lightning strike hit the Fulgham outdoor warning siren location. The siren can still be activated at the siren site manually and the component to control the siren from the emergency operations center has been overnighted.

Carlisle County

County and state road crews continue to work on clearing tree damage. Emergency leaders are warning drivers to be safe as flash flooding could remain a threat.

Fulton County

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is closed due to weather conditions.

Graves County

Hickman County

The Hickman County Sheriff’s Office is reporting there are several roads with damage. Drivers are urged to be alert for hanging wires and debris. The sheriff’s office is asking those who do not have to be out and about to stay home.

McCracken County

  • KY 284/Benton Road is blocked by downed trees and power lines at the 2 to 4 mm between Paducah’s Southside and Reidland.
  • KY 1954/Husbands Road blocked at 3.1mm for JPECC power line work near the KY 3057/Lydon Rd intersection.
  • KY 1255/Bonds Rd is blocked by floodwaters and a flooded car at the 1 to 2mm immediately west of the KY 450/Oaks Rd intersection - Signs posted

Lyon County

Lyon County Fiscal Court said there are reports that a possible tornado touched down and there is damage to houses, garages, barns and other buildings. Damage is reported in the area of U.S. 641. Anyone with damage is asked to call 270-625-2744 after 8 a.m. on Monday so the county can document the damage.

Marshall County

According to Marshall County Emergency Management Agency, utility companies, county and city fire departments and county, city, and state road departments are working diligently and safely to restore power and open roads. At this time there are no reports of injuries.

Trigg County

Trees are reported down all over the county. KYTC personnel had to cut and move trees to get to the maintenance facility to get needed equipment. Trees are reported down along KY 139 both north and south of Cadiz with trees down along U.S. 68-Business. Trees are down at more than 20 locations around the county.
