SEEKING ROLES FOR THE FOLLOWING PRODUCTIONS:

GODSPELL
Book by John-Michael Tebelak
Music and New Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Directed by Michael Lluberes
Rehearsals: August 27 – September 26, 2024
Performances: September 27 – October 20, 2024
Elgood Theater

The original GODSPELL was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award-winner, Stephen Schwartz, and it took the world by storm. Boasting a score with chart topping songs, GODSPELL is a sensation that continues to touch audiences.

A group of disciples help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, are employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

This bold new production will be re-imagined with actors performing in a pool of water.

NOTE: Actors should be comfortable working in water and performing in swimwear. Swimming skills are a plus. Please note any special skills, instruments, etc.

SEEKING:

[JESUS] A charismatic, energetic individual. A natural leader. They are high energy, charming, funny, gentle but with strength. They are a gifted teacher – the sort of person others instinctively follow. Tenor, strong up to G5.

[JOHN THE BAPTIST/JUDAS] They have attributes of both Biblical figures: They are both Jesus’ lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Perhaps the most serious of the group, but still has great physical comedy skills. Sings “Prepare Ye,” “All for the Best,” and “On the Willows.” Baritenor.

[PERFORMER 1] Very high energy. Impish and playful. In the original, they played several musical instruments, including concertina, recorder and guitar. Sings “We Beseech Thee”. Tenor with a strong falsetto/head voice up to a high D6.

[PERFORMER 2] Sings “All Good Gifts”. Not the brightest in the bunch, they are a little slow on the uptake. But there is a great sweetness and innocence about them. Tenor, needs to sing with control and brightness up to an A5.

[PERFORMER 3] The comedian, the class clown. The person who can do a hundred voices and imitations. They sing “Light of the World.” Tenor.

[PERFORMER 4] Child-like – open and sweet. Perhaps the youngest of the group. They are the first of the group to commit to following Jesus in the song “Day by Day.”

[PERFORMER 5] The confident one, the show-off. The first one to volunteer, sometimes they jump in before they really understand what’s going on. Sings “Oh Bless the Lord my Soul” Does not require a high belt, but does need to sing an A5 with power.

[PERFORMER 6] Sings “By My Side”. The shyest of the group starts to slowly warm up through the show and when they do, they commit all the way. Has a quiet, wise warmth to them.

[PERFORMER 7] Sassy and slightly cynical. Also the “sexy” one, but their sexiness contains a large element of put-on, in the manner of Mae West or Madonna (who in fact once played this role.) Sings “Turn Back, O Man”. A low voice, all the way down to a low G3 (Or even D3).

[PERFORMER 8] The class clown. Goofy and a cut-up. In the 2012 Broadway revival, they played several instruments, including conga, ukulele and guitar. Sings “Learn Your Lessons Well”. A lower, beltier voice, down to a G3.

Carrie White is a misfit. At school, she’s an outcast who’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving but cruelly controlling mother. But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it.

SEEKING:

[CARRIE WHITE] 18+ to play 16. Carrie White is a shy outcast who is often bullied by her classmates. While showering at school, Carrie has her first period, for which the other girls in her class tease her. This event sparks the emergence of Carrie’s telekinetic powers, which she ultimately uses for revenge after being cruelly pranked at the prom. Mezzo-Soprano, High Note E5, Low Note A3.

[MARGARET WHITE] 35-55. Carrie’s overprotective and abusive mother, Margaret is a religious zealot. Although she loves Carrie and wants to protect her from the world, especially from the school, her fanaticism often drives her to abuse her daughter. Soprano, High Note E5, Low Note C4 (Middle C).

[SUE SNELL] 18+ to play 16-18. One of the most popular girls at school, Sue initially teases Carrie like all the other girls, but later feels remorse for what she’s done. To make up for all she’s done, she asks her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to prom instead of her. Mezzo-Soprano, High Note E5, Low Note A3. Belting, rock.

[TOMMY ROSS] 18+ to play 16-18. Carrie’s version of a “Prince Charming.” At first Tommy takes no interest in Carrie but takes her to the prom after his girlfriend, Sue, asks him to. Tommy is apprehensive but soon finds himself wanting to become friends with Carrie. Tenor High Note C5, Low Note B2.

[MR. STEPHENS] 30’s-40’s.This well-intentioned English teacher and guidance counselor struggles to help his students realize their potential. A dedicated educator, he’s stretched thin in his duties, woefully underpaid, and a bit overwhelmed as to how to handle the Billy Nolans of the classroom zone. Tenor/Baritone, High Note B4, Low Note A3, belting, rock.

[BILLY NOLAN] 19-21. Now in his 6th year of high school, he’s a stupid bad boy whose wise mouth troublemaking has led him to spend more time in detention than in class. Chris manipulates him to do her bidding. Tenor/Baritone High Note C5, Low Note B2, belting, rock.

[NORMA] 18+ to play 16-18. Bitchy, gossipy and a shameless suck-up to authority, Norma is second in command to Chris’ queen bee.

[FRIEDA] 18+ to play 16-18. Sue’s brainy pal, she’s an easy going, get-along follower and a tireless extracurricular volunteer.

[HELEN] 18+ to play 16-18. Giggly and easily shocked, her immaturity and need to belong make her the perfect example of herd mentality.

[GEORGE] 18+ to play 16-18. Tommy’s jock wingman since childhood, George idolizes him. Perhaps a bit too much.

[STOKES] 18+ to play 16-18. A bit of a nerd, he’s happy to be included as one of Tommy’s posse.
